Pakistan Army kills two key militants commanders in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

By The South Asia Times

RAWALPINDI -  Pakistan’s security forces have killed two militants, including a key commander, during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, the military’s media wing said on Monday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation was carried out on April 19 after reports of the presence of militants described by authorities as “khwarij.” During an intense exchange of fire, two militants were killed, including a ring leader identified as Waheedullah alias Muktiar, along with a suicide bomber.

The military said weapons, ammunition, and a suicide jacket were recovered from the slain militants.

ISPR described Waheedullah as a “most wanted” militant involved in multiple attacks targeting security forces and civilians. He was also accused of acting as the main handler in a suicide attack in Bannu on February 21, 2026, which resulted in the killing of Lieutenant Colonel Gul Faraz.

“The operation has avenged the heinous act and brought the main perpetrator to justice,” the statement said, adding that the timely action of security forces helped avert a major potential attack.

A sanitization operation is ongoing in the area to eliminate any remaining militants.

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant violence, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) frequently blamed for attacks on security forces and civilians. Islamabad has repeatedly said that militant groups operate from bases in neighboring Afghanistan.

The military said counterterrorism operations under the “Azm-e-Istehkam” campaign would continue “at full pace” to eliminate what it described as foreign-sponsored terrorism from the country.
