China, Pakistan call for de-escalation in Middle East as Iran tensions rise

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - China Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday held a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to discuss the escalating situation surrounding Iran, as both sides called for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further regional instability.

According to Pakistan Foreign Ministry, the two officials exchanged views on the evolving security environment in the Middle East and broader global developments during the telephone conversation.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Dar outlined Islamabad’s perspective on the crisis and stressed the urgent need to reduce tensions across the region. He emphasized that diplomatic engagement and dialogue remain essential to preventing further escalation.

Wang welcomed Pakistan’s efforts to promote stability, praising what he described as Islamabad’s constructive role in encouraging de-escalation.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of resolving disputes through diplomacy and reaffirmed their support for solutions based on the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The two ministers also reiterated the strong ties between Pakistan and China, describing their relationship as an “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership,” and agreed to remain in close contact as the situation develops.

Separately on Tuesday, Wang also held talks with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the prime minister and foreign minister of Qatar, during which he called for an immediate ceasefire in the region and urged countries to pursue a political solution to the crisis.

China also expressed support for Gulf states taking a leading role in shaping the future of the region through diplomatic initiatives.

The calls come amid mounting regional tensions linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, raising concerns about broader instability across the Middle East.
