By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan and China have reaffirmed their support for ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran, following the first round of high-level talks mediated by Pakistan and Qatar under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

According to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar held a telephone conversation on Thursday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during which the two discussed progress in the Iran-U.S. peace process.

Dar briefed his Chinese counterpart on the talks held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, which resulted in the establishment of a high-level committee to oversee implementation of the mediation framework. He said three working groups had been formed to address nuclear issues, sanctions, and monitoring and dispute resolution mechanisms, with the aim of facilitating a final agreement between Washington and Tehran within 60 days.

The Pakistani foreign minister thanked China for its support for the peace process, highlighting Chinese President Xi Jinping's four-point peace proposal and a joint five-point Pakistan-China peace initiative aimed at promoting dialogue and regional stability.

Wang congratulated Pakistan's leadership on facilitating the mediation process and the signing of the Islamabad MoU, praising Islamabad's diplomatic engagement and efforts to promote peace through dialogue.

He reaffirmed China's support for Pakistan's mediation role and emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with the United Nations Charter.

The two ministers pledged to continue close coordination in support of a negotiated settlement between the United States and Iran, with the goal of ending hostilities and promoting long-term peace, stability and economic development in the region.
