Suicide bombing near police station in Pakistan kills 6 amid rising militant attacks

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A suicide bomber attempted to target a police station in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least six civilians and injuring several police officers after security forces intercepted the attacker before he could reach the compound, officials said on Friday.

The incident occurred near the Domail police station in Bannu District of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where an explosives-laden vehicle was stopped by police, triggering a powerful blast outside the facility. Authorities said the swift response likely prevented a higher death toll.

Among those killed were three women and one child, while several police personnel were wounded. Nearby houses were also damaged in the explosion, and the injured were transported to local hospitals.

The attack comes amid a broader surge in militant violence across the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in districts such as Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Karak and Kohat, where security forces—particularly police—have been frequent targets.

Many of these attacks have been attributed to the terrorist group Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, which has stepped up attacks in recent months. Pakistani officials have long accused militants of using safe havens in neighboring Afghanistan to launch cross-border assaults, an allegation Kabul denies.

The violence has intensified since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, with Islamabad warning that the presence of armed groups across the border continues to pose a serious threat.

Security forces have launched ongoing operations in affected areas, vowing to curb militant activity as concerns grow over the deteriorating security situation in Pakistan’s northwest.
