Pakistan, Bangladesh top diplomats hold first talks, pledge to strengthen bilateral ties

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD - Top diplomats of Pakistan and Bangladesh held their first formal conversation following recent political developments in Dhaka, agreeing to expand cooperation and build what they described as a forward-looking partnership.

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar held a telephone call with Bangladesh’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Dr. Khalil ur Rehman, congratulating him on his appointment and expressing Islamabad’s desire to deepen bilateral relations.

According to a statement from Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both leaders shared a vision of strengthening ties based on peace, stability, and prosperity. They agreed to enhance cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, regional connectivity, and collaboration in multilateral forums.

The call comes amid signs of renewed diplomatic engagement between the two South Asian nations after years of limited high-level contact.

Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dispatched senior cabinet minister Ahsan Iqbal to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh’s new leadership in Dhaka. During the visit, Iqbal met Bangladeshi new Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and extended an invitation for a visit to Pakistan, signaling Islamabad’s interest in broadening engagement.

Bilateral relations between Islamabad and Dhaka have shown signs of gradual improvement since 2024, following political upheaval in Bangladesh that led to the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after a wave of student-led protests. Hasina’s tenure had been marked by close ties with India and relatively cool relations with Pakistan.
