Pakistan government says It seeks “no politics” over Imran Khan’s health amid rising concerns

By The South Asia Times

Islamabad -  Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Tuesday stated that the government does not intend to politicize former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health, amid growing concerns raised by his party, family, and political opponents.

Speaking to reporters in Lahore, Naqvi referred to a recent medical examination of Khan conducted by a team of government-approved doctors at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. According to the minister, the report confirmed that Khan received appropriate medical attention and that authorities had even invited opposition representatives and PTI-nominated doctors to witness the checkup, according to daily Dawn.

“Our intention was that the checkup be performed in front of everyone,” Naqvi said, noting that PTI representatives declined to attend, citing party consultations. The minister added that opposition leaders were later briefed by the doctors at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad and had the opportunity to speak directly with PTI-appointed medical professionals for over 45 minutes.

Naqvi emphasized that both government and private doctors had been involved to ensure the highest standard of care, calling any public politicization “extremely inappropriate and misleading.”

The announcement comes as Khan’s family, party members, and supporters have repeatedly expressed concern over his eye condition, which first drew international attention in late January. Close aides, including former cabinet member Zulfi Bukhari, have called for urgent meetings with Khan’s personal doctors, citing the former prime minister’s continued worry about his health.

The minister also stressed that dialogue remains the preferred approach to resolving political disputes, asserting that sensible engagement from all parties could have prevented the current crisis.

Naqvi confirmed that the government is reviewing the conduct of the former Adiala Jail superintendent, whom PTI has accused of aggravating Khan’s health condition.
