Pakistan urges restraint as renewed US-Iran tensions threaten regional stability

By The South Asia Times

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Wednesday expressed deep concern over renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further destabilize the region.

In a statement, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said a renewed conflict was "in no one's interest" and stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable path toward lasting peace.

"Pakistan calls on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from any actions that may further undermine regional peace and stability. There is no alternative to continued engagement, dialogue and diplomacy to achieve the shared goal of peace in the region," the ministry said.

The ministry also urged all sides to honor their commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), describing it as "an enduring foundation for understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the region and beyond."

Pakistan reaffirmed its willingness to continue facilitating diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing further escalation.

The statement comes amid renewed strains between Washington and Tehran following a fresh deterioration in relations after months of fragile diplomacy.

The two countries had earlier stepped back from the brink of a wider conflict following a ceasefire that ended weeks of military confrontation.

Diplomatic engagement later resumed through indirect negotiations facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar, culminating in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a framework for continued dialogue, confidence-building measures and de-escalation.

Although the agreement eased immediate tensions, fundamental disputes over Iran's nuclear program, regional security, sanctions relief and military activities remained unresolved. Recent developments have again heightened fears that diplomatic progress could unravel, raising concerns across the Middle East and beyond.

Pakistan has consistently maintained that military confrontation would jeopardize regional security, disrupt global energy markets and undermine international efforts to achieve stability in the Gulf.

Islamabad has repeatedly emphasized that sustained diplomacy remains the only practical means of resolving differences between the United States and Iran and has reaffirmed its readiness to support any initiative that promotes peace and regional stability.
