Low-key farewell for Rubio fuels speculation over US-India ties

Low-key farewell for Rubio fuels speculation over US-India ties

By Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI — A video appearing to show U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio receiving a low-profile farewell at Indian airports has sparked debate among political observers, with some analysts suggesting the incident may reflect underlying tensions in U.S.-India relations.

The footage, widely circulated on social media, appeared to show Rubio being seen off by local officials rather than senior representatives of the Indian government. While neither Washington nor New Delhi has commented on the matter, the images have prompted questions about diplomatic protocol and the state of bilateral ties.

Bangkok-based political analyst Abdul Saboor argued that the absence of senior Indian officials was unusual for a visiting U.S. secretary of state.

“There was no visible high-level protocol for Secretary Rubio. The presence of only junior police and local administration officials at his departure could be viewed as a sign of diplomatic displeasure,” Saboor said.

He claimed the episode suggested “an unseen diplomatic struggle” between Washington and New Delhi despite public efforts by both sides to project strong ties.

Saboor also pointed to the recent Quad meeting, noting that Rubio spoke after the foreign ministers of Australia and Japan during a press conference. According to him, the sequencing, combined with the airport farewell, could be interpreted as a signal from India that it was unwilling to accord special treatment to the U.S. diplomat.

The analyst further argued that the Trump administration has recently strengthened engagement with Pakistan, describing Islamabad as a “reliable friend,” which he said may have unsettled policymakers in New Delhi.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend and has emphasized the importance of U.S.-India cooperation. Both countries continue to maintain extensive cooperation in trade, defense, technology and regional security.

However, the airport footage has added fuel to speculation among observers who believe differences may exist behind the public displays of partnership. Neither government has indicated that any diplomatic dispute exists, and no official explanation has been provided regarding the departure arrangements.
