BEIJING - China has successfully returned three astronauts to Earth after a mission lasting more than 200 days aboard its Tiangong space station, marking another milestone in the country’s rapidly advancing space program.

The return capsule carrying Zhang Lu, Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang landed safely on Friday at a designated recovery site in the Inner Mongolia region, Chinese state media reported. The landing took place at 8:12 p.m. Beijing time, according to Xinhua News.

The crew had been aboard the orbital station for an extended scientific mission, conducting experiments and supporting the continuous operation of Tiangong as part of China’s long-duration human spaceflight program.

Their return comes just days after Beijing launched a fresh crewed mission, Shenzhou-23, which sent astronauts Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan and Li Jiaying into orbit to take over station duties.

Before departing, the outgoing and incoming crews held a formal handover ceremony in space earlier this week, during which control of Tiangong’s operations was transferred to the new team.

China’s human spaceflight program has expanded steadily in recent years, with the Tiangong space station forming the backbone of its long-term ambitions in orbital research, international cooperation, and future deep-space exploration, including planned lunar missions.

Officials say the succession of missions highlights China’s growing capability to maintain a continuous human presence in orbit, a key step in its broader goal of becoming a leading global space power.
