China Condemns, UN Express Alarm Over U.S. Military Action in Venezuela

By The South Asia Times

Beijing / United Nations – China and the United Nations have expressed strong concern and alarm over reported United States military strikes against Venezuela, warning that the escalation poses serious risks to regional peace and violates international law.

China on Saturday said it was “deeply shocked” by what it described as the U.S.’s blatant use of force against a sovereign state. Responding to reports and claims by former U.S. President Donald Trump that Washington had carried out large-scale strikes against Venezuela and detained President Nicolás Maduro, the Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the action.

“This hegemonic act by the United States seriously violates international law, infringes upon Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threatens peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean,” the Chinese side said. Beijing stressed its firm opposition to the use of force and urged Washington to abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.

China also called on the U.S. to immediately cease actions that undermine the sovereignty and security of other countries.

Separately, the United Nations Secretary-General voiced deep alarm over the rapidly escalating situation in Venezuela. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the UN chief said the reported U.S. military action carries “potentially worrying implications for the region” and constitutes a dangerous precedent.

The Secretary-General emphasized that all parties must fully respect international law, including the UN Charter, and expressed concern that established international legal norms may not have been upheld. He called on all actors in Venezuela to exercise restraint and to engage in inclusive dialogue, grounded in respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The developments have heightened international concern as tensions rise in Latin America, with multiple global actors warning that further escalation could destabilize the wider region.
