Pakistan, China operationalize boundary joint commission to boost border cooperation

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan and China have operationalized a bilateral Boundary Joint Commission aimed at strengthening cooperation in border management, joint surveys, trade flows and people-to-people connectivity, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
The commission held its inaugural meeting at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad, marking a new institutional mechanism for coordination between the two neighboring countries on border-related issues.
The meeting was co-chaired by Li Ya, Deputy Director General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bilal Mahmood Chaudhary, Director General for China Affairs at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, the commission is expected to provide a framework for enhanced coordination on border management and joint border surveys, while also facilitating trade and movement of people across the Pakistan-China frontier.
The initiative comes as Islamabad and Beijing continue to deepen their broader bilateral partnership, including cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and efforts to expand economic and trade ties. Pakistan and China have also continued institutional dialogue on bilateral and regional issues in 2026.
The new commission could provide an additional channel for addressing practical issues along the mountainous frontier and improving connectivity between communities and commercial centers on both sides.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry described the operationalization of the commission as a “significant milestone” in relations between the two countries.
