China urges dialogue as top diplomat Wang Yi speaks with Iranian counterpart amid escalating tensions

By The South Asia Times

BEIJING - China has called for urgent dialogue to resolve the escalating Middle East crisis after its top diplomat held talks with Iran’s foreign minister on Tuesday.

Wang Yi spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, who briefed him on the latest developments and expressed appreciation for Beijing’s humanitarian assistance, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry statement.

Araghchi said the Iranian people remain united in resisting what he described as foreign aggression and in defending national sovereignty. He reiterated Tehran’s commitment to achieving a comprehensive ceasefire, stressing that a lasting solution—not a temporary pause—is needed to end hostilities.

He also addressed concerns over global energy routes, stating that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and safe for international shipping, while noting that countries directly involved in the conflict are currently not being considered in this framework.

Calling for restraint, Araghchi expressed hope that all parties would take steps toward de-escalation and welcomed China’s continued role in supporting peace efforts.

Wang Yi, in response, reaffirmed China’s position that conflicts should be resolved through negotiation rather than force, emphasizing that “talking is always better than fighting.” He said a peaceful resolution would serve not only Iran’s interests but also those of the broader international community.

The Chinese foreign minister urged all sides to seize the opportunity for diplomacy and move quickly toward a peace process, adding that China would maintain an objective and impartial stance while working to promote stability in the region.

The exchange highlights Beijing’s growing diplomatic engagement as global powers seek to contain a conflict that has already disrupted regional security and international markets.
