Australia PM welcomes US-Iran ceasefire, urges Israel to halt Lebanon strikes

Anthony Albanese has welcomed the recently announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling it an “important step forward” while cautioning that the agreement remains fragile and must lead to a broader and lasting peace.

Speaking at a press conference in Queensland, Albanese said the truce offers a critical opportunity to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East but warned that ongoing violence could undermine progress. “We want to see peace in this region,” he said, adding that stability would have global implications, including economic impacts far beyond the conflict zone.

The Australian prime minister also expressed concern over Israeli military actions in Lebanon, stressing that the ceasefire efforts should extend to the country. He indicated that continued strikes risk destabilizing the situation further and could threaten broader diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

Albanese emphasized that even if the ceasefire holds, disruptions caused by the conflict—particularly in energy supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz—will have long-term consequences. He said global supply chains and fuel markets are likely to remain under pressure, requiring sustained international coordination.

The remarks come amid heightened global concern over the Middle East crisis, as world leaders push for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic solutions to prevent further regional instability.
