Death of Gaza reporter raises journalist toll to 261 amid Palestinian genocide by Israel

By The South Asia Times

DUBAI - The death of Palestinian journalist Amal Mohammed Al‑Shamali has pushed the number of media workers killed in the conflict in Gaza Strip to 261, according to local authorities, highlighting growing concerns about the safety of journalists covering the war.

Al-Shamali, who worked as a correspondent for Qatar Radio, died amid ongoing hostilities between Israel and Palestinian groups in the enclave, Gaza officials said, Middle East Monitor reported.

Details surrounding the circumstances of her death were not immediately clear.

In a statement, the Gaza Government Media Office condemned what it described as the repeated targeting of journalists during the conflict. The office said the high number of media worker casualties reflects what it called systematic attacks on Palestinian reporters and media staff covering the war.

Authorities in Gaza urged international journalism bodies, including the International Federation of Journalists and the Arab Journalists Union, to denounce the killings and push for stronger protection for journalists operating in the territory.

The office also called on international institutions and legal bodies to investigate the deaths of media workers and hold those responsible accountable under international law.

The war in Gaza has created one of the most dangerous environments in the world for reporters, with local and international media groups repeatedly warning about the risks faced by journalists attempting to document the conflict and its humanitarian impact.
