India Launches Airstrikes in Pakistan; 26 Civilians Killed, Pakistan Responds by Downing Fighter Jets and Drones

ISLAMABAD – May 8, 2025 — Tensions between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan reached a dangerous new high as India carried out airstrikes late Tuesday night and early Wednesday across multiple areas in Pakistan, including the Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir (Azad Kashmir).

According to Pakistani authorities, the Indian strikes targeted civilian areas, resulting in the deaths of at least 26 people, including women and children. Hospitals in the affected regions have reported dozens more injured.

In a swift response, Pakistan’s military announced it had shot down five Indian fighter jets and three drones that had entered its airspace following the attacks. The Pakistan Air Force also went on high alert, with combat air patrols intensified along the eastern border.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the strikes, calling them a “blatant violation of international law and Pakistan’s sovereignty.” The government warned that it reserves the right to self-defense under the UN Charter.

Following an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif , the committee authorized the armed forces to “respond at a time and place of their choosing” and take “appropriate revenge” for what it described as an unprovoked act of aggression.

India has not yet officially commented on the strikes or the reported losses of aircraft.

The escalation follows weeks of heightened tensions after the April 22 attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi blamed on groups allegedly operating from Pakistani territory — a claim Islamabad has firmly denied.

With both sides now engaging in direct military confrontation, international powers have urged restraint to avoid further escalation that could spiral into a wider conflict.
